  • Narrator: It was a perfect day for boating. Anyone with a boat-- or even without-- was floating on the river. George had never seen so many different boats in his life.
  • Curious George: Ooh...
  • Narrator: And then he saw a boat that wasn't like any he'd ever seen before-- a boat full of cars.
  • Curious George: Oh. (excited chattering)
  • Man with the Yellow Hat: Oh, that's... that's a ferryboat. It carries people in cars across the river.
  • Curious George: Ah!
  • Narrator: George loved cars. But cars and boats together? It was the apple pie and ice cream of transportation.
  • Curious George: (giggling) Ooh.
  • Mr. Renkins: (over speaker) Ahoy. Today's our annual model boat show. Big prizes for little boats.
  • Bill: George! Over here! What do you think of her, George?
  • Curious George: Ooh.
  • Bill: Sailors call boats "her." I bet a city kid like you never knew that.
  • Curious George: (excited chattering)
  • Man with the Yellow Hat: Yeah. You made that, Bill?
  • Bill: Yes, sir.
  • Man with the Yellow Hat: Well, that is pretty impressive, isn't it, George?
  • Curious George: (agreeable chattering)
  • Bill: Aw, thanks. But it's nothing compared to Mr. Quint's model whaling boat. That's it over there.
  • Mr. Quint: Drop the nets, laddies. Aye, aye, Cap'n.
  • Bill: And over there is Mrs. Renkins' ark.
  • (Mrs. Renkins made an ark) (mechanical grunting) (mechanical mooing)
  • Bill: And look at all those over there. It's some pretty tough competition this year.
  • Man with the Yellow Hat: Now, don't underestimate yourself, Bill. That is one fine-looking boat. Good luck.
  • Curious George: (excited chattering)
  • Man with the Yellow Hat: Oh, sure, you can stay with Bill. I'll set you up right here. Okay, I'll be over at the bleachers saving up some seats and sizing up Bill's competition.
  • Bill: I'd sure like to win a ribbon, George. To buy this kit, I had to save nine weeks of money from my paper route. Agh! I almost forgot to do my paper route. Could you do me a big favor and watch my boat while I'm gone?
  • Curious George: (excited chattering) Ooh.
  • Bill: See ya soon!
  • (bike bell rings)
  • Narrator: George knew boat watching was serious business. There were a lot of nice boats here, but not one person had built the greatest boat-- (Curious George dreams about him on a ferryboat) a ferryboat. Maybe he could build one.
  • (motor humming)
  • Narrator: Commanding a ferry had been George's lifelong dream, ever since he first heard of them-- earlier that morning.
  • Jumpy Squirrel: (squeaking)
  • Curious George: Ooh-ooh... (chattering)
  • Jumpy Squirrel: (chittering)
  • Curious George: (groans) (gasps)
  • Narrator: Luckily, Bill's boat looked good as new.
  • Curious George: (chattering)
  • Narrator: Maybe he just put it down the wrong way.
  • (bike bell rings)
  • Bill: (off-screen) Hey, George, how's it going?
  • Curious George: (shouts)
  • Bill: I'll be back after I deliver the rest of these papers. Thanks for taking good care of my boat.
  • Curious George: (chattering)
  • Narrator: George couldn't figure out what he'd done to it. It looked perfect. (Curious George dreams about Bill sinking his boat) But he knew one thing...
  • Bill: (wailing) No...!
  • Narrator: Bill couldn't enter the contest with this boat.
  • Bill: (wailing)
  • Curious George: (groans) Ooh.
  • Narrator: George had to build him a new one, and fast. Unfortunately, George had no idea how to do that.
  • Bill: (wailing)
  • (people talking)
  • Narrator: First, George had to find out what boats were made of.
  • Curious George: (chattering)
  • Narrator: If you've gotta build a boat in a hurry, a bucket of toys is a handy thing to have.
  • Curious George: Hmm... (dreams about him pointing) (excited cry)
  • Narrator: Jumpy Squirrel's new favorite thing to do was watch George sink boats. And he wasn't disappointed.
  • Curious George: (chattering) Ooh.
  • Narrator: It turned out, mel didn't float so well. Especially when it was full of holes.
  • Curious George: Hmmm.
  • Narrator: Plastic. Plastic might work.
  • Curious George: (chattering) (dreams about him pointing)
  • Narrator: Just like the other toy boat.
  • Curious George: Aha!
  • Jumpy Squirrel: (chittering) Oh!
  • Narrator: But metal cars are heavy. Even so, it was sort of floating, it was just sort of floating underwater.
  • Bill: Hey, George! (bike bell rings) See ya soon. I'm almost done.
  • Curious George: Bye! (chattering)
  • Narrator: George had three great-looking boats. But just looking boaty didn't make them float.
  • Curious George: (whimpers) (dreams about him knocking) (chattering)
  • Narrator: At last, George had something he knew would float. (dreams about Mrs. Renkins and Mr. Quint with their boats) Bill wasn't going to win any contests with a tiny board.
  • Bill: (wailing) No...!
  • (all the stuff had flown into the water)
  • Narrator: And this is what he had to work with.
  • Curious George: Oh...
  • Narrator: Maybe it was time to study boats in action. Wide boats seemed to work well.
  • Curious George: Aha.
  • (boat toots)
  • Narrator: Steam coming out...
  • (boat tooting)
  • Narrator: A propeller...
  • Curious George: (giggles)
  • Narrator: And a good solid bottom.
  • (duck quacking)
  • Narrator: Okay, a wide boat... with steam coming out... and a propeller.
  • Curious George: Hmm.
  • Bill: All done. I'm just gonna drop my bike at home. Would you mind watching my boat for a few more minutes?
  • Curious George: Huh? (excited chattering)
  • (bike bell ringing)
  • Curious George: (sighs heavily) (chattering) Hmm. (puts the boat on the water)
  • Bill: Newspaper delivery is an exact business. People expect it at the same time every day.
  • Curious George: Ah. (nervous giggling)
  • Bill: Thanks for watching my boat. Where is my boat? George! You built this yourself?
  • Curious George: Mm-hmm.
  • Bill: Wow! I thought city kids just bought everything! Where'd you say my boat was?
  • Curious George: Uh-oh. Uh... Heh... (chattering)
  • Bill: Holy cow...
  • Curious George: (sad sigh)
  • Bill: You did me a real favor, George.
  • Curious George: Huh? (chattering)
  • Bill: I forgot to close the windows! Thanks for showing me. I would've really been sunk if it happened in the contest.
  • Curious George: (giggling) Aha!
  • Bill: Model boating requires utmost attention to tiny details-- and keeping the water out.
  • Curious George: (chuckles) Ah!
  • Bill: Come on, let's go enter! Hey, you gotta bring your boat to enter it.
  • Curious George: Huh? (chattering and whimpering)
  • Bill: Sure! Who else has a boat like that?
  • Mr. Renkins: Let's hear it for our winners!
  • All: (cheering)
  • Man with the Yellow Hat: Congratulations, George. I didn't even know you built a boat.
  • Bill: I convinced him to enter it and... Did you see this? It says "Best Boat by a Monkey!" (laughs) That's funny. They must have run out of regular ribbons. I'll take care of this. I'll ask 'em to make you one that says, "Best Boat by a City Kid."
  • Curious George: (chuckles)
  • Kid #1: George is a monkey and he can do things you can't do.
  • Kid #2: I really like the boat he built, and we're gonna make some, too. Because we have all kinds of cool stuff to make boats with.
  • Kid #3: I'm using a pie pan, a cup, a paper towel roll.
  • Kid #1: I think it will float.
  • Kid #2: I'm using some straws and a cup. I think the boat won't sink.
  • Kid #3: This boat is gonna float, but if it doesn't float, it's okay. I think it's gonna sink.
  • Kid #1: The straws are filling with water, and then the water weighs it down.
  • Kid #3: If it got water in the front, it's gonna sink. Mine's sinking down to the bottom!
  • Kid #1: Cool! (laughing)
  • Kid #3: We can make boats float...
  • Kid #1: and sink.
